Tobacco Free Lincoln County

Tobacco Free Lincoln County is a collaborative effort that focuses on keeping youth from starting to use tobacco, reducing access to tobacco products, and increasing awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoke.  It is funded by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

90% of adult tobacco users started before the age of 18.
Most of them got it from older friends or family members.
You can BE PART OF THE SOLUTION, by refusing to make tobacco available to children and teenagers.






In the first half of this year, 132 Lincoln County residents signed smoke-free home pledges and 135 signed smoke-free vehicle pledges. Their commitment affects 252 people who live in their homes. Many more residents who have not signed the pledge, have smoke-free homes and vehicles anyway. Residents like Clean Indoor Air law passed five years ago. The law prohibiting smoking in offices, stores and other public indoor areas, went into effect on June 1, 2009, and remains popular across the state. Sutherland Housing Authority passes smoke-free policy.

On June 1, 2014, the housing authority implemented smoke-free policies in their 20 units.

Surgeon General's adds to health effects of smoking, calls for tobacco-free generation

In January, 1964, the US Surgeon General issued his first report on smoking an health. It announced that smoking causes lung cancer. Several reports have been issued since, adding to the list of harmful effects of smoking, and the 50th anniversary report this year, added colorectal cancer, erectile dysfunction, diabetes, and others. The report called on       all Americans to help "make the next generation tobacco-free."
