THE RESPONSE

We are committed to providing tobacco prevention information to youth: informative one-on-one presentations, participating in youth orientated community events and helping kids say "no way" to smoking and tobacco use. We are also committed to reducing and eliminating secondhand smoke in public places, outdoor areas, daycare centers, multi-unit housing complexes, and schools.

There are many ways you can get involved with tobacco prevention efforts in Lincoln County:

~ Provide up-to-date prevention information to the community.

~ Advocate for policies that reduce tobacco use and protect the public from secondhand smoke.

~ Educate youth on the dangers of tobacco use and work to reduce youth access to tobacco products.

~ Take action on the many tobacco-related issues impacting Lincoln County.

THE IMPACT

Responsible Sales Legislation

In 2007, the city of North Platte passed legislation to include tobacco products and paraphernalia in the existing Responsible Beverage Server Training. The newly titled Responsible Alcohol and Tobacco Sales Training is now mandatory for every business or individual in North Platte who has an alcohol and/or tobacco license and individuals who serve alcohol or sell tobacco.

Smoke Free Public Areas

In 2008, the city of North Platte passed legislation prohibiting the use of tobacco in certain areas of city parks and property. Areas include fences and bleachers near or around the softball fields, park playground equipment, areas where animals are present, and the Cody Park Rides.

Smoke Free Mid-Plains Community College

Mid-Plains Community College passed a policy prohibiting tobacco use on all their college campuses effective January 1, 2010. Mid-Plains Community College is the first community college in Nebraska to pass a policy that prohibits tobacco use internally and on all exterior property.
