2014: JUBILEE YEAR!

On January 14, 1964, the U.S. Surgeon General released his first report on "Smoking and Health." The report identified smoking as a cause of lung cancer. Since then, 30 additional Surgeon General's reports have been released, showing the growing evidence of health effects from smoking and secondhand smoke: heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pregnancy complications, and childhood diseases.

The 50th anniversary report was released in January, 2014. It included the following:<

*Cigarettes are more dangerous in their makeup than they used to be
*In addition to lung cancer, and the other problems we already knew about; smoking increases the risks of colorectal cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, male erectile dysfunction and diabetes
*A call to action! Let's all work to make the next generation tobacco free!
