About Our Program

Assets Teams is a program for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders that focuses on the Developmental Assets, which are 40 positive qualities and experiences that have an impact on young people’s development. Assets Teams aim to help young people succeed by recognizing and developing their strengths.

Using the 40 Developmental Assets, students can build on the positive aspects of their lives, resist negative forces that can hurt their development, and become leaders in their schools and communities. Working as teams, students have opportunities within the school and community to use their skills to promote positive change. All community members can assist in building assets within our children to help them become caring, responsible, and productive adults. The 40 Developmental Assets framework was developed by the Search Institute of Minneapolis, MN in 1990. Since then, this framework and approach to youth development has become the most frequently cited and widely utilized in the world.

How can my child join an Assets Team?

At the beginning of each school year, the teachers and administrators select the students to be on Assets Teams. Students will receive an invitation, welcome letter, and permission forms. Students are invited to stay with the same Assets Team until the end of eighth grade.

What are the 40 Developmental Assets?

The 40 Developmental Assets are common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make. For the full list of Developmental Assets, take a look at this informational PDF.

How can I build Assets in the youth in my life?

Over time, studies consistently show that the more assets that young people have, the less likely they are to engage in high-risk behaviors and the more likely they are to thrive. Visit the Search Institute website for more information.
